San Antonio, TX – Day 2

Hey Guys!

This post continues our time in San Antonio.

Read Day 1 here – Read Day 3 here, Day 4 here & Day 5 here

On our 2nd day, we headed out to the River walk to have breakfast.

Our hotel served breakfast but we wanted to eat somewhere on the River walk.

Shots along the River walk.

We came up on a restaurant called, Rivers Edge Cafe so we decided we would try it out.

I ordered the omelet and potatoes & the hubby ordered the pancakes with a side of sausage.

The food was really good but really expensive…our bill came to $46 before tip!

After breakfast, we headed to the Alamo.

The Alamo is a historic Spanish mission and fortress compound founded in the 18th century by Roman Catholic missionaries.

It’s open daily from 9-5:30.

Once we arrived, we realized that you had to make a timed reservation before you could enter the Mission.

So, I went online to make a reservation but the earliest they had available was 2:30 pm and it was only 10:30 am so we had to find something else to do in the meantime.

We walked to the front of the Alamo to snap some pics.

There’s several other things to see in this area besides the Alamo so we walked the grounds to check it out.

Click here for a map of what all you can see

This live oak tree was approx. 40 yrs old when it was transplanted at the Alamo in 1913.

There were several bronze statues throughout the grounds.

We came up on the neat looking memorial…it was called the Alamo Cenotaph.

The Alamo Cenotaph is a memorial located near the the Alamo and stands to commemorate the men and women who chose to defend the Alamo rather than surrender despite overwhelming odds.

After walking around this area for about an hour, we decided to walk to the Tower of Americas.

On the way, we passed these beautiful historic houses near the Hemisfair park.

We stopped for a quick pic in one of the rides from the world’s fair in 1968.

A shot of the Tower of Americas as we were walking towards it..

The tower tickets are $16.50 for adults and $12 for children ages 4-12.

After purchasing our tickets, we had to wait in line for the elevator.

After waiting approx. 20 mins, we headed to the top.

The tower is 750 ft tall and has 360 degree views of San Antonio….it also has a revolving restaurant…but, you have to make reservations to eat at the restaurant.

The tower was built in 1966 for the World’s Fair that took place in 1968.

Shots from the top:

After leaving the tower, we walked around the Hemisfair park ….it’s a really nice park so I recommend you spend some time here if you visit the Tower of Americas.

We spotted these angel wings in the park so, of course, we had to get our pic made in front of them.

After leaving here, we headed back to the River walk for lunch.

We ended up eating at a place called, The Republic of Texas.

The restaurant offered a variety of food options from BBQ, to burgers to shrimp…

We both ordered the fajitas….I thought the food was average but my hubby really liked it.

See their menu here & read reviews here

After lunch, we headed back to the Alamo since it was close to our entrance time.

We passed the Torch of Friendship statue along the way..

Once we arrived back to the Alamo, they let us go ahead and enter the church a few minutes early.

Once inside, you aren’t allowed to take pics….I’m a bit rebellious when it comes to “no photography” so I had to snap a few pics while we were inside. ; )

After exiting the church, we took a few more pics of the outside.

After leaving here, we headed back to the River walk to take a boat tour...this is very popular thing to when visiting San Antonio.

Tickets are $13.50 for adults and $.50 for children ages 1-5.

Buy tickets here, read reviews here & check out their tours here

The narrated boat tours are approx 30-40 mins long…the boats can hold approx. 40 people.

I personally felt the boat was too crowded and once your seated, you can’t move…it was just ok to me but one of those “must do’s” when visiting the River walk.

Shots of the River walk during our boat tour

Once off the boat, we walked around the River walk…

We tried to visit the nearby St. Joseph’s Church but it was closed.

During our walk around the River walk, we came up on Marriage Island.

Marriage Island is an islet on the San Antonio River Walk that is used for weddings. River guides claim that it brings good luck to new marriages and that it is heart-shaped.

Of course, we had to get our picture taken on Marriage Island!

After leaving here, we continued our walk around the River walk…

We finally headed to the streets above the River walk to watch the Fiesta parade.

The area was very crowded…..Fiesta week had been going on all week and the parade was the grand finale.

We were told the parade was going to start at 7, so we arrived around 5:30 to find a decent place to sit.

My hubby went to a nearby food truck and purchased some of their fried chicken and potatoes….He loved it  but I couldn’t eat it…..I rarely eat fried foods.

After waiting for almost 2.5 hrs, the parade finally started.

After watching a few bands and floats, we were very disappointed that we had waited almost 3 hrs for this parade…..it was not good!

Shortly after the parade started, we left and headed back to our hotel to call it a night.

Thanks for reading!

Stay tuned for Day 3 in San Antonio!
